vpses suck. I tried them for years. it's hard to find a good provider
and the ones i've seen bbs people use are a rip off.
I prefer a dedicated server. i use ovh.
So have I and like you, i don't like them for one reason or another.

    I'm rocking 2 Dell PowerEdge R610's running 17 VM's w/o a burp.
(Of course, now I may have jinxd it by typing that...)

My ISP is Glo Fiber. I'm getting 1.2Gb/s both ways.

i recommend staying away from sites like lowendbox and getting a dedicated server with a reputable company. split the cost with friends.

If you're in it for the long haul, I highly recommend this.

    Hello

I can only speak for germany

The disadvantage here in Germany is simply that renting servers, which also have
a large storage capacity, is simply unaffordable! If I only have a ÿmanageableÿ
database, it is of course cheaper. That's what I did with my BBS forum and rented
a server ($28/month). But with a BBS with a large file base it is unaffordable.

    Hi Mro

    Look....

I've got here (at home) my BBS Server... and explain why.. (the topic here)

We could only compare apples with apples (I hope you are with me)?

    Actually my BBS run with a I7 9700K, 64 GByte and a Geforce 1060,
because I use 4 27" Monitors with it.

    C: is a 1 TByte M2 SSD
    D: - F: are 20 TByte HDD's
G: and H: are 2 TByte HDD's and will be exchanged soon to 20 TByte HDD's, too. I: is a SATA SSD with 2 TByte, working as a backup drive for C:

Backup strategy for drives D: - F: isn't even listed yet.

So.. "if" I try to get something "same" or nearly same at Hetzner.. and I hope you
are with me again.. the prize would be surely 150 and more bucks each month. And I just wanted to explain that my configuration here, if I rent it from a provider,
is quite expensive on a monthly basis, as ongoing costs for a hobby! Of course, if
I wanna choose a smaller size of space, ex. Type EX 44 I'm at 116,- Euro's each month,
with 2 x 22TByte Drives. Windows Server (Software) not included. As I see.. 52 bucks...

And that is my "personal reason" for running the BBS here at home.

I hope you're okay with it how I've described it now?

    Greetings

    Mike

i thought you were looking to get a dedicated server from a provider, not wagging your dick about what you have at home. and why the hell do you have 4 27 inch displays for your bbs? that's just retarded.

in this day and age it's just stupid to run a bbs at home.
and you dont need tons of files, just like you dont have to have tons of doorgames. hell, we don't even have users anymore.

    Nope Mro

I don't looking for a dedicated server. Maybe it's my "fault" to explain, why I'm
running my BBS at my home (the topic!!). It has nothing to do with "my dick is bigger"!
Only why it is to expensive for me to go this way (external Hoster).

And it's very nice, kind and funny for me also, too that others are telling me, what I
have to do or in which way I have to do my (our) hobby!!! I don't do this for others!
I do it for myself at first! If others share this hobby with me, super. If not..
It's OK for me, too! By the way, the same applies to my BBS forum! Same reason! I love this hobby very much, regardless of whether others share this/my enthusiasm
about that with me! But if they share this hobby/experience/enthusiasm etc., for me, everything comes full circle and we can all share our beloved hobby and have fun with
it hopefully for the next years!

But maybe.. and I could really be, you misunderstood my posting here completely
wrong? Last words from me about writing/posting in any nets here. If nobody will
write, nets going down and getting dead. But if somebody write to a topic, he/she/it
becomes a "nice" feedback. Maybe one has something to do with the other? Diversity
and different opinions on a topic should simply be part of a democratic world!

I wish you a nice day Mro!

i don't play into that nostalgia stuff.
Things are SO much different than when we were running bbses over our phone lines. There is no comparison. We are still using ansi and we still have doorgames. Everything is so much different. What we run and how we run it. The people are different. How we interact is different.

I should have refrased my statement more carefully, though. if you are truly serving up 20+ tb of files you are essentially a content delivery source you should have the muscle and the bw to handle it, something that a dedicated server on a reputable provider can deliver.

I wouldn't run a bbs at home anymore because I like to have it out of house, I don't want to share my connection with it. In my case i use my servers for other things as well.

another thing is that i think our ability to communicate in todays age has degraded. i say these things, not because i pull them out of my ass, I have been that idiot and ran services for a lot of people at home. i've dealt with poor service providers and I've made a lot of mistakes over the decades.

I've learned there's better ways to do things by trial and error and failing and spending and losing money.

For me it's a kind of relaxation and at the same time I enjoy getting things working

your bbs or your forum so maybe it's still in its infant stage.

Thank you very much Mro, that I have the right of my own decicion! But I don't know
if it's really better on a server from a provider! I have everything here at home and like
it in that way (hello Rob :-) ).

Yep.. I've made only a small promoting of my BBS forum. And I think, you've made already
a feedback to this in April or May. And guess... not really positiv! But it's ok for me....
I still think that the forum is a good thing to bring sysops from the various BBS's
together again! And the forum offers all things, that Facebook/Reddit/Discord and and and
offers, too. With one difference. It is privately operated and the data stays there!
And it is also completely free for users. I do not pursue any financial interests.
The topic is just important to me!

And to the BBS. I will present a good working, good structured and good designed result
if I promote my BBS. And I have a "finished BBS" in my brain. So if this isn't achieved in
my opinion, there is no point in promoting it in my eyes. The same reason for not
promoting my BBS last year, this year and maybe next year, too. Remember... I do this
as a hobby and primarily for me.... If you believe it, or not!

    Mike

I like running my BBS(es) at home. Been doing it since 1984. Of course they are very different now than they were then. Then, I only ran 1 Atari 8-bit BBS on several floppy drives (and eventually a 5 mb hard disk (wow)).

It's my hobby and I kinda like it...

Warms my heart. I had the same kind of setup although a Commodore 64 with 3 X 1541 drives (floppies) :-)
The difference was that back then, mostly people within your personal areacode called you, and today, you're available to the whole world and nobody calls. <grin>

I saw Pure Nihilism BBS running on an Apple II, and was watching the
screen as someone entered a message. I noticed that when the caller
saved a message, it automatically deleted a message to make room. I
think he had something like 300 messages on the board at the time.

    My, how things have changed.

i think a lot of people have forgotten that the local aspect is what made bbsing great. a lot of sysops in today's age are blind to that.

Strangely enough... when I was running the Atari 8bit BBS (1984-87), I had about 75% callers from long distance. I know why but refuse to comment on the grounds... etc etc.

When I switched over to a PC (FidoNet), the caller ratio switched to 75% locals...

That's the truth! I ran BBSs from 93-97. In 1996 I offered dial-up internet service.
If we called out to a BBS that was long distance we had to cut it real short, and it was always a nice surprise to receive a LD user.

I worked at the company that developed Tomb Raider. It was odd working
for a company where you could have scantilly-clad women on your PC
background, as long as it was Lara Croft. PS1 era Lara was pretty
polygon sparse, if you know what I'm saying.

I was so pissed that they couldn't get it together enough to tie the
game into the movie and get a release out to coincide with the movie
    release.

I never played those games, but one thing I'm sometimes reminded of is that when I visited Germany and Switzerland in 1998, there was a German song on the radio at the time called M„nner sind Schweine ("Men are pigs" in English; by Die Žrtze), and the music video featured Lara Croft.
